Chinney was tasked with the conversion of Mei Ho House, a Grade II Historic Building, from a formerly H-shaped 1950s resettlement block within Shek Kip Mei Estate, to a 129-room boutique hostel with nostalgic themed rooms, retro-styled café, and a heritage museum in-situ.
Working at a heritage site had presented a unique set of challenges, which Chinney dealt with according to the principles of revitalisation and preservation. As part of the construction works, Chinney reinstated the original characters, “41”, “Mei Ho House” and “美荷樓“, on the external facade, while remained in strict accordance with Antiquities and Monuments Office (AMO) approved plans. Chinney have also preserved original heritage items such as metal grilles, metal gates, water closets, doors, and kitchen countertops as much as possible.
The commitment of Chinney towards heritage conservation was recognised by The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), from whom we are very honoured to be presented with Silver Award in the Heritage Conservation Category of the CIOB Construction Manager of the Year Awards 2014.
